Two different lines of inquiry are on view in Tom Jessen's exhibition "Under Present Conditions." These two bodies of work have very distinct stylistic approaches. Inspired by an on-line video game, the "conditionals" are translations from digital information to tactile analog objects. By asking the viewer to scrutinize the nature and characteristics of the forms, Jessen addresses questions about visual learning and modes of perception in these playful, hard-edge, reductive works. The sense of play is accentuated by the spatial shifts between the relief created by a router and the flat painted surfaces. The smaller works, also on wood, are a pendulum swing stylistically. They use gestural mark-making and an intuitive approach to form and process. Although an arena of spontaneity is cultivated, systematic conditions are still imposed on the process through materials, size, palette and even enlisting his kids in collaboration. Not only do these intuitive works highlight the process of making, they also address the practice of self-critique.
